Seattle by way of Tallahassee

Trying to get back into gardening after some years away.

Replies:

What are you doing to get started? Are there plants you are truly looking forward to growing?

At the moment I'm just trying to get our raised garden beds cleaned up. They're overgrown with blackberries and I just discovered an active wasp nest in one of them.

I tried planting some beet starts two weeks ago. The next morning they were mostly chewed down to the ground. I'm thinking cutworms.

Feeling fairly defeated, honestly.

Hopefully you were able to deal with the wasp nest without much issue. It is rather shocking how quickly blackberries can take over in the right conditions.

Wow, that is rather impressive for cutworms. Definitely understand your frustration with that. Did you put anything around the base when you planted them? I have found that a ring about 2 inches tall (such as a canning ring, as long as it's tall enough) around the plant has helped with such issues. Could also combine that with diatomaceous earth to help keep them away.
