This is a question that came up recently for me after growing out a piece of apricot root stock with a root sucker on it.

If you grow an apricot from a root sucker what will it produce?

Will the fruit be the same fruit as the parent tree?

Root Suckers Grown From Grafted Fruit Trees

Suckers grown from the roots of a grafted tree will produce a tree of same variety as the rootstock. In this case any fruit produced will not match the parent tree.

In the case of apricots, these are a tree which are often grafted. Look for a graft point on the trunk if you aren't sure whether you're apricot tree is grafted.

Typically, apricots are grafted onto peach or plum root stock. The rootstock is usually grown for growth habit, or resistance, not for good fruit. Understanding this, one can expect that growing out a root sucker from a grafted apricot tree will likely produce some type of stone fruit tree, but the fruit might not necessarily taste any good.
